Member representing Demsa/Numan/ Lamurde Federal Constituency of Adamawa State in the National Assembly, Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, said the deplorable condition for almost two decades of 90.5 kilometre Lamurde-Karim-Lamido Road has subjected commuters, especially farmers and traders to untoward hardship over the years.
He told journalists in an interview that the quantity of rice being produced in the area is so much that the residents of the area cannot consume up to 5％ of it.He said the 95％ of the rice produced in the place is being transported to other parts of the country but with deplorable condition of the road many farmers are in jeopardy.
Hon. Kwamoti Laori had earlier presented a motion at House of Representatives seeking for quick intervention by reconstructing the road.
Presenting a motion titled “Reconstruction of 90.5 Kilometers Lafiya-Lamurde-Karim-Lamido Road in Adamawa State, Bitrus Laori praised the House to urge the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to award contract for reconstruction of the road.
“Notes that the 90.5 kilometres Lamurde-Karim-Lamido road has been in a very deplorable condition
for almost two (2) decades thereby subjecting commuters, especially farmers and traders to untoward hardship over the years.
“Aware that the road, which links Adamawa and Taraba States was constructed in 1986/1987 and runs through one of the largest rice production hubs and cattle markets in Northeast Nigeria.
“Disturbed that the deplorable condition of the road is negatively impacting on socio-economic activities in the region thus causing avoidable losses of invaluable lives and properties;
Also aware that no fewer than 800-1000 trucks ply the road on a typical market day, transporting and other rice products to other parts of the country and the present condition of the road is seriously affecting business activities and frustrating the federal government’s program of sustainable agriculture, local rice production and food security in the Country,” he said.
He said the socio-economic importance of the road to both the national economy and those of
the States it traverse which will receive boost, generate more employment, reduce accidents which lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties and also improve the general wellbeing and security of people of the area when the road is reconstructed.
Concerned that the present state of the road is negatively impacting on the socio-economic lives of the people in communities along the stretch of the road as the important interstate trade link it provides for movement of persons, goods and services across Adamawa/Taraba States is no longer achievable.”
Following his motion, the House
urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to award contract for reconstruction of the Lafiya- Lamurde-Karim- Lamido Road;
mandated the Committees on Works and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.
